Inspired by the world of literature
Celadon is inspired by a page from the 'Dream of the Red Chamber'. The page describes a key moment from the book where a poetry club has formed by a group of women in the novel and the page is collection of all their input to a group poem, describing the crab blossom. Overloaded with descriptive feeling, the page speaks of a “Shower of rain’, ‘the purity of the snow’, the ‘sun’s rays and mossy pots’ and ‘the beauteous jade’. This world of waxy green grass and clear white purity informed Karine’s sparkling interpretation in Celadon. She wanted to use notes that felt unique to the Chinese origin of the novel, so the cardamom, magnolia, the smoked tea, and mate take us to China.
